Starting 603 Arts has always been about sharing incredible artists with the next generation of art enthusiasts and future collectors. For me, exhibitions have been the most educational and eye-opening experiences to discover new artists. I’ve found that shows allow me to really understand their research and contextualize their practice in history, current events, and among their peers. 603’s goal is to provide exhibition opportunities for emerging artists worldwide so that their work might resonate with audiences who have typically felt their stories unheard or underrepresented in the cultural canon.
I’m excited to share that our first exhibition, The cataclym of binary star systems, will open on Saturday, August 8 at Nunu Fine Art. The exhibition will feature 12 artists from Asia, Latin America, and their diasporas, including four artists exhibiting in the United States for the first time.
Why cataclysm? What are binary star systems?
For anyone who knows me, my deep interest in the unknowns of space seeps into several areas of my life, from the books and movies I consume to the cosmic and alien art I adore and collect. When we were thinking about the themes we wanted to address for the foundation’s inaugural exhibition, my mind naturally went here. My personal interest in this field has led me to some incredible artists whose work I’m fortunate enough to own, and whose practices I admire. But more than that, I also think of what would happen if our current existence on this planet is no longer sustainable (the premise of many sci-fi stories).
In a binary star system, two gravitationally bound stars are orbiting a common center of mass. If one day, one star started to siphon off enough mass from its smaller star, the latter could be entirely consumed (theoretically). And so we would have to figure out how we might live somewhere else and what that journey would look like. What would we carry with us? What kind of life would we build if we had to start over? How would humanity look like?
This is obviously incredibly catastrophic, but it also made me think about the immigrant experience. There are several traumatic factors that would force someone to leave everything familiar behind in search of even the possibility of a better life. The 12 artists in this exhibition think about personal and cultural memory, experiment with new forms of life, and they explore an alternate or imagined future.
